Grooming & Care Tips

Here I will share a few guidelines we follow. There are many different ways to raise an animal and the choice is yours. Here we are just recommending some products we use and things you might like as well.
We feed high quality food which is very important for a healthy happy puppy/dog.
You don't have to feed what we feed but we definately recommend feeding just as high of quality foods. One of the most important things I can tell you is DO NOT feed cheap foods ... usually found at the grocery store or large department stores. They are loaded with preservatives, tons of unnatural JUNK, disgusting roadkill style meats (alot of times the leftovers from the butcher floor... hair and all!) which are overheated on top of it all that takes away nutrition. Your dog will have alot more waste coming out of its body than nutrients going in!
Purchase your food from your vet, petsmart, or a local pet food store. They will have the quality you need to keep your pup truely healthy.
Our dogs and pups are fed Royal Canin and Blue Holistic foods. We recommend these foods but if you should choose to switch to another hiqh quality please do so slowly so you don't upset these little ones system.
Foods we recommend for your dogs/pups:
Royal Canin
Blue Holistic
Nutro Natural
Natures Variety
We feed dry kibble for our tinies constantly, at an older age you may start a scheduled feeding period, which is nice because you can then also schedule potty breaks. We also offer canned once a day as well to pregnant and nursing mothers and weaning babies.
Yorkies can be picky eaters, they can develop hypoglycemia!! WATCH YOUR TINY CLOSELY TO BE SURE THEY GET ENOUGH FOOD AND WATER!
We give ours Nutri-Cal to keep up energy and prevent any hypoglycemia as well. Just give them a bit every day, maybe a couple times a day. They love the stuff too.
If I feel they are dehydrated at all I give them clear pedialyte.
For bathing we use Fresh-N-Clean oatmeal and baking soda shampoo and conditioners or the Paul Mitchel shampoos & conditioners. LOVE the smell of both these brands and it works great. You can get it at pet smart or your salon.
We use a variety of combs and brushes. Your dog will need to be combed or brushed regularly to prevent mattes if they have their hair kept long. It is not a hard or time consuming task, quick and easy, just a couple of minutes as long as you are on a regular schedule because if you are there won't be any mattes to detangle anyway. I do the clipping and grooming myself. You may do it yourself or take your pup t a groomer, whichever works for you.
Check ebay for do it yourself books sold by experienced groomers or DVDs on how to groom! They're great tools!
We use puppy eye wipes and ear wipes found at pet smart. And also a ear cleaner from the vet epi-otic.
A good anitbiotic eyedrop is Gentomiacin, ask your vet if your pup may need some for a little cold or something. Can be used in conjunction with oral antibiotics such as amoxi drops.
There are alot of do it yourself ways out there, but in my opinion untill you've had years of experience and learning, please take your pet to the vet immediately if you suspect a problem of any kind.
Another thing we avoid is low quality treats, buy a quality puppy treat such as Nutro puppy treats from pet smart.
Your pup needs to chew, and don't put your shoes at risk! Offer quality chew bones. Make sure the bones are a kind that won't splinter. And also make sure your pup has plenty of play and chew toys. Keep an eye on them when they get worn to be sure nothing could cause a choking hazard.
Trim your pups nails regularly, we do ours apprx every 2 weeks, makes it easier and quicker. The more used to it they are the less likely they are to fight you on it. Be careful not to cut to short and cause bleeding. There is a special powder (styptic powder) for fixing that if you accidentaly do though. We use flour also though actually.
For housetraining we recommend crate training if you want your pup to learn to potty outdoors. It is the fastest, most efficient way of all. Be persistant and in the end your pup won't have to be crated often but they actually won't mind the crate anyway, it will be their safe place. Never use the crate for punishment. You can ouside potty train, puppy pad train, or litterbox train. We do outside and litterbox training. Your pup will have a great start on the litterbox. To help get your pup to go where you want them to you can get a puppy training spray at pet smart that you spray in the area you want them to go and it attracts them there.
If you want some extra fun for your pup we find the clothing and bows on websites, petsmart has cute shirts, and we also will be offering our own line of bows and barrettes made by us for your lil posh pups! We'll be adding them to our site shortly!
PLEASE spay or nueter your pet, they will be happier and healthier as pets if they are fixed. IT WILL REDUCE THEIR RISK OF CANCER GREATLY. PLUS you won't have to deal with a male that will lift his leg and "sprinkle" to mark his territory ... which he may decide is your end table or couch or entertainment center. A male nuetered at a young age won't develop this need. And for a female you will save yourself on the messy bleeding heat cycles if she is spayed. So not only will your pet be happier, you will too!
Hope some of this info can help you out. If you have any questions feel free to ask us.
